Protecting the lake doesn't mean putting it behind glass. It means finding responsible ways for people to enjoy it.
We can protect what matters and still build a community people love to enjoy.
Protection is needed for the lake.
Yes. I do.
Lake Simcoe is part of who we are. It is where we swim, paddle, boat, fish, walk, gather and make memories.
It also needs our attention.
Water Soldier is an invasive aquatic plant affecting Cook’s Bay. Reports conclude that it can reduce recreational access and poses safety concerns because of its sharp, serrated edges and dense matting growth patterns.
This is a story about persistence, partnership and staying with a problem that will not be solved overnight.
We cannot afford a passive approach to this crisis. The motion I introduced to Council passed successfully in March 2026, establishing a formal resolution to "draw a line" at Cook's Bay.
Since the motion passed, Dawn Gallagher-Murphy announced the provincial funding in June 2026. Along with Drone Technology and multi-agency projects to monitor and keep the spread at bay.
Several other municipalities have passed the motion, including Innisfil, Bradford, Ramara and East Gwillimbury. There is more work to do!
As of August 18, 2026, Mayor Quirk and I presented the Water Soldier motion at the AMO Conference, where we asked that the motion and funding commitment be moved to the federal level, and we are awaiting a response.
Our Local MP, Jacob Mantel, has presented a petition. Please read and sign.
Use this page to explain the multi-year work, link to reliable information, show updates and give you practical ways to identify and report the plant.
