We Got A Lot Done Ward 1!

And we did it together!

One thing I've learned as a councillor is that reports don't tell the whole story.

You have to get out into the community.

Walk the parks.
Look at the street.

Talk to people.

Ask what isn't working.

Then take that information back to the table.

Good local government needs both the data and experience of the local areas to work best.

It's about relationships.

A big part of what got done in the last 4 years came from

what mattered to you, and that often started with a conversation.

I hear you, there's more to do!

Because I've spent the last four years listening, learning how the staff system works and following things through, I think that foundation matters as we move into the next chapter.

Take a look at the stories and snapshot of the projects that shaped the last four years - We got a lot done in Ward 1!

* Names have been changed. If you recognize your story and would like full credit for bringing it forward, please reach out; I'd be happy to share your name and give you full credit for the work you inspired!

West Park - Parking lots and more!

How I found it in 2022!

West Park parking lots have long been uneven. In 2022, the nets were torn, and there were many requests from the baseball leagues, such as for the lights to stay on longer, more maintenance, and new benches. So we worked on it!

It's better now in 2026!

After hearing the requests, we increased the aggregate volume and maintenance, paved the entrances, installed new nets, started to add new benches, and the lights now stay on just a bit longer.

I hear that there is more work to do!

I am ready to keep working to make things better!

West Park - New Playground

How I found it in 2022!

The Playground at West Park never reopened after the COVID closure.

The equipment was at the end of its life. It was time for new!

Year-over-year, West Park saw investment!

It's better now in 2026!

A new baseball-inspired playground was installed along with a pathway. Families have enjoyed it ever since!

Additionally, new picnic tables and dozens of plantings have been added to help make the park better for everyone.

Wondering if West Park is back on the planning table? Yes, it is!

Get the latest update and have your say.

Glenwoods Park - Drainage Corrections

How I found it in 2022!

Despite the new tree plantings, on a rainy-day walk with staff, it was easy to see that Glenwoods Park needed attention. There was considerable pooling, a lack of seating and the beach was overgrown.

It's better now in 2026!

A French drain was added on the north side of the park, and the parking lot was topped up. Also, new furniture was added. As for the beach, many are concerned that the upkeep isn't providing access to the past. Well, a lot has changed when it comes to shorelines on Lake Simcoe. Read more about the former beach and its future.

Shangri-La - The Final Layer!

How I found it in 2022!

This project, like many others, had been delayed due to COVID. Local Homeowners Anne and Todd reached out to request help getting the final pavement layer completed.

It's better now in 2026!

Thanks to the reminder, the work was completed by the local builder. This is a great example of when we know,  we can act!

Hollywood Park - Stormwater Drainage Correction

How I found it in 2022!

I met Rhoda at Glenwoods Plaza and heard about her local park. She explained that there was often standing water in the open space. After visiting Hollywood Park, Rhoda was right about the water conidtions.

 I requested a staff review.

It's better now in 2026!

Soon, the stormwater system was cleared out, and the proper water channel was recreated. Also, the old basketball net was removed. Now the water flows better, and the green space is re-established.

What do you see in the future for this space?

Queensway - Increased Boulevard Maintenance

Simcoe Landing, Haskins, and Queensway here are unkept, overgrown boulevards.

How I found it in 2022!

It took a few years to get the regular maintenance and plantings on the Queensway boulevard. I want to thank everyone who I visited on Haskins and everyday passersby for your patience.

It's better now in 2026!

We worked with our development and builder partners to upgrade the area, and have new turf and gardens planted.

The overall area is better, but there is more to do!

What do you think we could do with boulevard areas?

Adeline - Trail Head Clean-up

How I found it in 2022!

Charlotte and Frank have lived near this path for over 40 years. Frank used to help clean the area up, but now a days it harder for him.

They shared their concern for the lost level of care. I could see it too.

It's better now in 2026!

With the couple helping me understand the gap in care, I was able to work with staff on year-over-year improvements, including a wider path clearing, a better trail and an added P-arm. The outcome is better care for the trailhead, while respecting the naturalized features.

Lake Drive South / Rober St - Drainage

How I found it in 2022!

One of the key drainage channels on Lake Drive South was in need of repair. Working with Terry and Mark, staff were able to clear out the invasive plants and shore up the waterway connection.

It's better now in 2026!

Although this work held up Terry and Mark's driveway upgrade, working together, it became a well-timed project, delivering better area drainage, and Terry and Mark got that new driveway too!

Canal / Bruce / Robert - Investigation and the future healt

How I found it in 2022!

Homeowner Rhonda reached out with concerns over the changes in the canal area of the lake. It was getting harder for her, her family, and neighbours to travel on and enjoy the waterway.

Late-summer duckweed had taken over!

It's better in 2026!

This became one of the more complex files I have worked on. I learned about the multi-jurisdictional connection; in other words, many people had a stake in ownership, how it functioned, how it was maintained, and its effect on its health.

There is much more to this story: starting with community action!

Lake Drive South / Hollywood - Water Connection Renewal

How I found it in 2022!

The water connections along Lake Dr South had come to the end of their life. Much like what Bayview and Hollywood had gone through, it was time for Lake dr. They say good things come to those who wait; it was a long year that had its bumps!

It's better in 2026!

Construction is never easy. The record snow and rainfall of 2026 added several underground areas to be washed out. In the end, all connections passed the one-year inspection; aggregate was added, and the new road was paved, the shoulders were topped up, and new markings completed. This will be a road we can all enjoy for many years to come!

Tampa to Annshiela - Path Clean-up and Lighting

How I found it in 2022!

I started spending more time looking at our parks, paths and public spaces on the ground. I wanted to see what people were seeing, not just what was listed in a report.  When I found the linkage between Tampa and Annshiela, I knew this there was a lot of room for improvment!

It's better now in 2026!

The goal was practical: recognize the path's potential,  work on clearing brush to improve the connection, safety, accessibility and comfort over time. Additionally, residents have been surveyed regarding adding lights to the path. Let's see what the local folks want!

Patchel / Atherton / Tim Jacobs - Invasive Plant Removal

How I found it in 2022!

Early in the 4-year term, Karolyn reached out with concern about a small brush fire behind her home off of Tim Jacobs. This opened up another multi-jurisdictional issue; in other words, many people had a say in the area, including the School Board, York Region, a builder, a commercial owner, Lake Simcoe Region Authority and the Town.

I have learned these files take the longest to move forward.

It's better now in 2026!

Staff worked through the administrative layers and joined in partnership to undergo an expansive stormwater management clean-up. With that came the removal of brush, which happened to be an invasive species. Some fixes are quick and some take many partners, steps and years to get done.

Shirlea - Safety Post Upgrade

How I found it in 2022!

Walking along one day, I noticed several posts out of alignment. Taking this issue to staff and having the experts review the safety standards helped fix the posts.

It's better now in 2026!

Now that there are new posts installed there is better safety now too!

Ditch Corrections

How I found it in 2022!

If you live lakeside or in the framing area in Ward 1, you live with ditches - love them or hate them, they are a part of our water-cleaning system and vital for a healthier lake. In the past, often one-off and smal ditch fixes was common place.

It's better now in 2026!

We have changed the way we correct the ditch network! You may live on street or go by the new ditch projects, and notice that they are expansive, by fixing long lines. This move to bigger projects lines helps the whole area drain better, and supports water flow.

Dovedale - Walkway Clean-up

Tarrnce Park -Added Fence and Clean-up Started

How I found it in 2022!

When I met Daryl and Louanne, they took time to share their history and some of the story's that transpired around them over the last +30years. One observation they shared with me and have helpedwith over the past 4 years, is Terrance Park . They are focused on getting the park back into the public hands and having uninterrupted access to the beach.

It's better now in 2026!

While this is reasonable, the file opened up another multi-jurisdictional condition. And that means completely slower action. Now the file did not end up moving as fast as I thought; we are still working on it. There is now better clarity regarding the ownership line that was marked by a Town ownded
