I have been participating in civic action since I was a teenager.
When my husband Dave and I moved to Keswick in 2005, I became an active participant in our town. Since then, I have built numerous relationships and invested considerable time and energy into the committees and events that have shaped Georgina.
In 2017 I won the mid-term by-election for Ward 1. I was on Council for eighteen months, and during that time I did what I said I would do and more.
For example, I helped ensure that the 2014 four-year strategic plan stayed on track. I listened to public requests. I furthered our common desire to preserve our natural shorelines, green spaces, and agricultural land.
I am proud to have also supported the following work:
Serving those 18 months was a true honour, and I am thankful and humbled to have had the community’s trust.
Being a councillor allowed me to enjoy several important occasions, such as:
Most importantly, I shared in the community’s growth. I celebrated fifteen new business openings, and as a result I also ate a lot of cake! I attended and presented at both volunteer and business awards, walked in several parades, and attended dozens of charitable events where I witnessed the heart of our town—its people.
My experience as councillor showed me new personal limits. I challenged myself. I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone, and I grew considerably from the experience.
Since then, I’ve been involved in several issues affecting our community, including serving as Vice-Chair of the Active Transportation and Trails Committee.
Over the past term (2018-2022) I also completed a certification in Human Resources, and I served as Community Engagement Project Coordinator for the UpHub Project (United Way).
I’m happy to offer more insight into any of the above.
The 2018 election results showed that I obtained over 40% of the votes and increased my voter support by 50%. Despite the community rally, I didn’t win the opportunity to continue in this role, but I never stopped working for our community.
In February 2019, I announced the closure of my Yoga Instruction business and took a teaching sabbatical. I took some time off to reflect.
In early 2020, I was excited to start a contract at York Support Services Network (YSSN) as the Community Engagement Project Coordinator. YSSN is one of York Region's largest public Mental Health Service providers and leads the Developmental Services of Ontario (DSO) programs.
The emergence of COVID-19 caused a massive disruption in business operations and service needs. We watched as the emergency call volume went up 35% month over month. I was stationed on the York Region’s Emergency Food table, when the reports of the food crisis translated into a 70% increase in demand. Despite the circumstances, the agency was amazingly resilient and supportive—and the focus never waned. We were there to serve the people.
I was also fortunate enough to work in the Peer Support space (those with lived experience of mental health problems, addictions, neurological differences, or caregivers of these people). I experienced many powerful moments that I won't forget.
I am proud to say that with our Peers, the UpHub Team and through important partnerships with York Region, York Regional Police, 211 Services, and over fifty service agencies, we delivered over 15,000 printed community resource guides, and created an online guide to connect individuals to York Region's 400 available community supports and services.
In May 2020, I returned to school part-time. I completed a Human Resources Management (HRM) Certification at Toronto Metropolitan (formerly Ryerson) University, and I am currently working towards the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation.
As of March 31, 2022, I completed a two-year contract with YSSN and graduated from HRM.
Since then I have worked as a consultant with several businesses to help them:
As of July 2020, I stepped forward as a candidate for Ward 1 Councillor in the Town of Georgina. Whether I am successful in my bid or not, I will continue to be a helper by nature; someone who roots for the health and well-being of others. For me, meaningful work means working for the good of all.
My career path has been diverse. I have been an entrepreneur, I have worked with nonprofits, and I have worked with Government and private companies. I have always been drawn to roles that provide meaningful impact.
Organizations have trusted me to develop, coordinate, and lead programs, projects, and events. I have helped build teams and I’ve provided training and coaching to several organizations.
I naturally gravitate to highly-visible liaison and business development roles. I successfully built and maintained essential client/partnership relationships and defined my leadership skills in dynamic management roles, most often in times of sustained change and newly created positions, reporting directly to the executive level, owners or constituents.
For more than ten years, I was a multi-award-winning social entrepreneur focused on accessibility, inclusion, and equitable program development. I developed Ten Yoga Levels and facilitated 6500+ hours of yoga teaching at the Therapy/Recovery Level. All this while volunteering as a Community Producer, host, and leading over thirty volunteers in completing 100 Ten Yoga shows for Rogers TV.
I am excited to put my HRM and experience to work and support organizations poised to help their people thrive. I am running for Ward 1 Councillor in the Town of Georgina this fall. I genuinely hope I can serve my community in many ways, and I am so thankful for the opportunity.
Since I moved to Georgina, I have taken an active role in the community through volunteering and leadership roles. I believe in getting involved to help others, building relationships, as well as developing my skills and personal interests.
